    What the brief asks

What Does the 11-Question 5CO03 Brief Ask?

Eleven questions, one for each requirement of an effective people professional. You mix theory, practical examples and personal reflection, include feedback from at least one other person, and keep a CPD plan and record. Signpost each answer with question numbers and AC references.

    11questions
    ~3,250words, plus CPD documents
    1+person giving feedback
    3past activities reflected on

Questions on professional values ask you to appraise what it means to be a people professional using the CIPD Profession Map (AC 1.1), discuss one personal and one ethical value with examples (AC 1.2), explain why influencing others matters and what happens when practitioners cannot (AC 1.3), and say when and how you would react to one unethical and one illegal matter (AC 1.4).

Questions on valuing people ask for a written argument on the human and business benefits of feeling included, valued and fairly treated, using different theoretical perspectives and your own (AC 2.1), how to design inclusive initiatives and check them afterwards (AC 2.2), and your ability to work inclusively, using your reflections and feedback (AC 2.3).

Questions on development ask how the people practitioner role is evolving, with CPD plan entries (AC 3.1), a self-assessment against a specification you choose, using feedback (AC 3.2), development activities added to your plan with reasons (AC 3.3) and reflections on three activities already completed, in your CPD record (AC 3.4). Check your own centre's version.

Collect feedback from at least one person who knows your work before you start. Several answers depend on it.

What Does Each 5CO03 Question Need to Show?

The brief says wider reading is not required for AC 2.3, 3.2, 3.3 and 3.4. The other criteria benefit from theory and sources.

ACWhat the brief asksWhat a strong answer shows
1.1Appraise what it means to be a people professional, using the Profession MapA judgement, not a summary of the map
1.2One personal and one ethical value, with examplesEach value visible in a real work decision
1.3Why influencing matters; consequences of not influencingClear consequences for people and the organisation
1.4When and how to react to an unethical and an illegal matterOne example of each, with the steps you would take
2.1An argument on the benefits of inclusion and fair treatmentTwo or more theories plus your own view
2.2Designing inclusive initiatives and checking them afterwardsPractical design steps and a check after launch
2.3Your inclusive working, with feedbackHonest reflection, supported by quoted feedback
3.1How the role is evolving; CPD plan entriesA trend linked to a specific plan entry
3.2Self-assessment against a specification, with feedbackStrengths, weaknesses and how feedback shaped them
3.3Development activities and why you chose themActivities that answer the gaps in AC 3.2
3.4Reflections on three completed activitiesImpact on your behaviour or performance

How Should You Split 3,250 Words Across Eleven Questions?

Give the most space to the AC 2.1 argument. Keep AC 3.3 short, since your CPD plan carries the detail, and put AC 3.4 in your CPD record.

    ACSuggested wordsACSuggested words
    1.1~3502.3~300
    1.2~3003.1~300
    1.3~3003.2~300
    1.4~3503.3~150, plus plan entries
    2.1~5503.4In the CPD record
    2.2~350

The CPD plan or record for the relevant questions sits outside the 3,250 words. Edit it to show only what those questions ask for.

What Does a Strong 5CO03 AC 1.4 Paragraph Look Like?

An illustrative paragraph on the illegal matter in AC 1.4, written for a fictional Dubai property firm.

Illustrative paragraph — do not submit

AC 1.4: raising an illegal matter

An illegal matter I would raise is a request to send employees' medical certificates to a line manager's personal email account. At Seastone Property Services, a fictional Dubai property firm, health information is sensitive personal data, and sharing it this way could breach Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 on personal data protection. I would first explain the concern to the manager calmly and offer a compliant alternative, such as a fitness-to-work note without medical detail. If the request continued, I would raise it in writing with the HR manager, following the company's whistleblowing or grievance policy, and keep a factual record. Raising the issue early protects employees and the company, and shows the professional courage the CIPD Profession Map describes.

    Why does this paragraph work?

    • States the matter and why it is illegal
    • Names the law, without overstating it
    • Sets out the steps in order, from informal to formal
    • Links the action to a Profession Map behaviour

This paragraph describes a fictional organisation and is here only to show structure. Do not copy, adapt line by line or submit it. Your centre checks originality, and your evidence must describe your own work, organisation and thinking.

    Mistakes assessors mark down

    Which 5CO03 Mistakes Lose Marks?

Most referrals come from description where the brief asks for appraisal, argument or reflection.

    The Profession Map summarised.
An appraisal of what being a people professional means in practice.
    Unethical and illegal examples blurred.
One clearly legal-but-wrong matter and one clear breach of law.
An AC 2.1 argument with one theory.
Two or more perspectives, compared, ending with your own view.
    Feedback mentioned but not used.
The feedback quoted or summarised, and how it changed your view.
A CPD plan unrelated to the self-assessment.
Each activity answers a gap from AC 3.2.
    Adapt it to your organisation

How Do You Adapt This Example to Your Own Work?

Start by collecting feedback and choosing your specification. Then take every example from your own workplace.

    Collect Feedback First

Ask a line manager, colleague or internal client for short written feedback on how you work with others.

    Choose Your Specification

Your job description, or any two core behaviour areas of the Profession Map at associate level.

Use the Law That Applies to You

In mainland UAE, Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 covers employment and Federal Decree-Law No. 45 of 2021 covers personal data. DIFC and ADGM have their own laws.

    Build Your CPD Documents Early

Set up your plan and record before you write, so questions 8, 10 and 11 can point to them.

Want Your Reflection and Feedback Section Checked?

Send your draft. A mentor checks that feedback is used as evidence, criterion by criterion.

    FAQs

What Do Learners Ask About the 5CO03 Example?

An illegal matter breaks a law, such as misusing personal data. An unethical matter may be legal but still wrong, such as favouring a friend in a shortlist. The brief asks for one of each and how you would raise it.

Feedback from at least one person who has insight into your behaviour at work, such as a line manager, colleague or internal client. Collect it before you start and explain how it shaped your self-assessment.

The brief lets you choose, for example your job description or any two core behaviour areas of the CIPD Profession Map at associate level. Pick one that gives you clear standards to compare against.

No. In this typical recent brief, the CPD plan or record sits outside the word count. Edit it to show only the information the relevant questions ask for.

This guide covers the single-task brief with eleven questions. The 2025 example covers the two-task version: six questions on professional and ethical behaviours, then a professional review with a CPD record.
